I’m interested in interactions between the oral cavity and the gut with a focus on mucosal immunity. During my PhD, I used an animal model of periodontitis to analyze the variability of the gingival immune response against variants of a common periodontitis-associated oral bacterium. My aim is to elucidate potential parallels between both mucosal barriers. In order to understand how inflammatory conditions such as periodontitis or IBD could be related, I will take advantage of omics and animal models of periodontitis and colitis to gain insights into the shared mechanisms and immune response dynamics within the oral-gut axis.
